Visit Shakopee Itinerary: Couple’s Date Night at Canterbury Park
Looking for a date night spot to enjoy with your special someone? Head to Canterbury Park for an evening of fun! Canterbury Park is a conveniently located a 25-minute drive from downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. You can watch a race, try your luck at cards, and enjoy a tasty meal and drinks.
The highlight of a date night at Canterbury Park is live horse racing. Live races are held Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 5:00 p.m., and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Grab a program when you get to the park—it will include detailed instructions for playing the horses. Next, place your bet with a bet taker or a self-service machine, and cheer on your horse to victory!
There are several different seating options on race days, so you can enjoy Canterbury Park whatever your budget. Outdoor seating and limited indoor seating are available for free on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you prefer an indoor option, you can purchase a general admission ticket or clubhouse restaurant seat, or you can splurge on a reserved outdoor table with a stellar view of the finish line.
Tuesdays are a great date night for frugal couples, with two-for-admission, hot dogs, and Budweiser tap beers. On Wednesdays, enjoy $5 craft beer specials. Thursdays feature live music from a rotating lineup of local bands. Find additional 2021 racing details and purchase tickets here—there’s a $2 discount if you purchase advance tickets online.
In addition to live racing, Canterbury Park is home to a card casino with Minnesota’s widest variety of table games, including blackjack and Texas hold’em. The card casino is open around the clock, and poker tournaments are scheduled daily.
If you prefer a contact-free casino experience, check out blackjack at the Touchscreen Zone—a live dealer is physically distanced from players, and players get their own gaming stations and don’t need to touch the cards or chips.
Celebrate your wins (or shake off your losses) with dinner at Chips Bar and Restaurant, which is located in the card casino. The menu includes appetizers like wings and steak bites, as well as made-to-order artisan pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, and Asian-inspired rice and noodle dishes.
If you prefer something more casual, several fast food stands are available during live racing, including pizza by the slice, ice cream, and concession stand classics like cheese curds and pronto pups. Check out a full list of dining options at Canterbury Park here.
Whether you’re looking for a craft brew or a refreshing cocktail, there are plenty of spots to grab a drink—the Paddock Pub is open daily, and several stands are open during live racing, including the outdoor Bud Light Bar.
Wrap up your date night with a stay at a local hotel—there are several nearby accomodations at a variety of price points, and some offer Canterbury special rates (be sure to ask when you’re making your reservation).
Visit Shakopee for your couple’s getaway—in addition to Canterbury Park, Shakopee is home to Valleyfair and the Minnesota Renaissance Festival, and is conveniently located to area attractions including Mystic Lake Casino, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, and Chanhassen Dinner Theater.
